DISCUSSING THE WAITING LIST CRISIS IN LOUISIANA

The Arc of Caddo-Bossier hosted a “Community Conversation” on January 19, 2009 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am in the Board Room at The Arc building on 351 Jordan Street.  The focus of the conversation was the Waiting List Crisis.  There are over 10,000 people with disabilities in Louisiana waiting for services.  View meeting photos...

This crisis is impacting well over 300,000 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families across the nation who are waiting 8 to 12 years before receiving the proper supports and services.  In the meantime family members are forced to give up their jobs, houses and quality of life.  With the proper supports individuals with disabilities have the potential to be hard-working, tax-paying citizens.  In the current economy, the Waiting List Crisis looms larger since those in need will be hardest hit by severe budget cuts being made to the supports and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  More

The Presidential Inauguration Committee 2009 contacted The Arc of the United States and requested our participation in National Day of Service.  This day builds on Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy of hope and advocacy for civil rights and social justice for all.

People with Intellectual Disabilities Deserve Better
Eliminate the "R" Word

Dream Works, home of Steven Spielberg, put out a film called Tropic Thunder directed by and starring Ben Stiller.  The Arc learned of the storyline and its outright attack on people with intellectual disabilities.  Executive Director Peter Berns jumped into action with other national disability groups and called for a meeting with Dream Works.

Peter contacted the local Arc Chapter and started a whirlwind process.  The Arc staff is implementing a nationwide campaign to protest the portrayal of people with intellectual disabilities in Hollywood.
